more emily dickinson

emily dickinson is a saint on the order of meister eckhart or julian of norwich. emily's 315 relates her experience when she is visited by the emperor of men. the bible calls this state "be still and know that I am God". thanks to eric for pointing out this poem.

315
He fumbles at your Soul
As Players at the Keys
Before they drop full Music on --
He stuns you by degrees --
Prepares your brittle Nature
For the Ethereal Blow
By fainter Hammers -- further heard --
Then nearer -- Then so slow
Your Breath has time to straighten --
Your Brain -- to bubble Cool --
Deals -- One -- imperial -- Thunderbolt --
That scalps your naked Soul --

When Winds take Forests in the Paws --
The Universe -- is still --

LOS OJOS DE UN NIÑO

LOS OJOS DE UN NIÑO

En la inocente mirada de un niño
se enciende el misterio de las estrellas.
El asombro de esa mirada
interroga por la supuesta
proclamación de amor y paz;
bellas palabras que se deslizan por la lengua
y se columpian en los labios. Urge
una respuesta
ante el horror que se expande
como bombas de napalm,
destruyendo a su paso
la frágil luz de la inocencia.
Crecen campos de amargos silencios.
Legiones de pies descalzos y voces
selladas, perturban las pulcras
composiciones
- manteles bordados en blanco -
donde se exhiben, a menudo,
las baratijas que conforman
un mundo indiferente.

THE EYES OF A CHILD

In the innocent look of a child
the mystery of the stars blazes.
The astonishment of that look
he interrogates the would-be
proclamation of love and peace;
beautiful words that slide off the tongue
balance on the lips. It is urgent
an answer
in the face of the horror that spreads
as napalm bombs,
destroying in their passage
the fragile light of innocence.
Fields of sad silences grow.
Legions of bare feet and voices
sealed, they perturb the neat
compositions
- shrouds embroidered in white -
where they exhibit
the trinkets that conform
an indifferent world.
